He is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn over all creation.
Colossians 1:15 (CSB)
We were up to Colossians 1:15-20 last night in Bible study. We got through verses 15 and 16. There’s a lot of stuff in there. Verse 15 alone deals with Jesus being the image of the invisible God AND the firstborn over creation. Incredible stuff. This is why I wish I knew the Greek.
Image – εἰκών (eikōn)
Jesus is the exact image of YHWH. Not only is he the representation but also the manifestation of the One True God.
Firstborn – πρωτότοκος (prōtotokos)
While “firstborn” can be used to designate the child born first (Luke 2:7) in the New Testament it is also used to show the preeminence of Christ (Rom. 8:29; Heb.1:6) and the fact that he is the first to be resurrected to eternal life (Col. 1:18; Rev. 1:5).
Grace and peace
