Watch What You Say

No foul language should come from your mouth, but only what is good for building up someone in need, so that it gives grace to those who hear.

Ephesians 4:29 (CSB)

_______________________________________________________________________

In the past I have always thought of profanity when reading this verse. I do believe that is part of it but it’s so much more than just dirty words. Some translations use “unwholesome” or “corrupting” instead of “foul” and I think those are probably closer to Paul’s intent. Let me STRESS that I don’t know biblical Greek and can only appeal those who do. The word used is σαπρὸς (saprós) and the word study I have opened up says that it means “rotten” or “worthless” and those would fit as well. In fact, I think I like “rotten” better than the words typically used. The things we say are supposed to be beneficial and productive. Paul says that when we speak our words should give grace. That covers MUCH more than just saying certain words. This passage convicts me. Am I giving grace when I speak? Am I building people up or breaking them down?

Lord, let my words reflect You love and grace. Help me build up those who hear the things I say.
