Sermon Thought For The Day – 5/11

Happy Mother’s Day. I hadn’t intended on posting this so late in the day but I took my grandson to go see my mother before he went home. We left after church and headed south. It’s 159 miles one way so I didn’t get home until about twenty minutes ago.

My sermon this morning was titled: The Heart Of A Mother – Reflecting The Heart of God. It wasn’t your typical Mother’s Day sermon. One can only preach Proverbs 31 so many times before people start getting sick of it, myself included. The three points I attempted to make were that mothers (and really all of us) should do our best to reflect the heart of God.

My three points (if you want to call them that) were: God is the ultimate nurturer and provider, God taught us sacrificial love, and God is the source of wisdom and guidance. For many of us, we first saw those demonstrated by our mothers. I also challenged us all to reflect those in our lives whether we are mothers or not.

Before the sermon I sang “Faith Of Our Mothers” and after the sermon I prayed a special blessing over all the mothers gathered there. I did make a point to address the fact that not all mothers are biological mothers and not all women who want to be mothers are able to. We should love and honor them as well.

Grace and peace.
