Different translations render this phrase in different ways. After consulting several commentaries and looking at the way this has been historically understood I would paraphrase it this way: Don’t mess around with any thing that is wicked. Don’t do it. Don’t even think about. If there is any doubt in your mind; get away from it. I wonder how much heartache I could have avoided in my life if I had just done that? There were so many times that I got as close to the line as humanly possible and then tried to figure out how to even further without crossing it. There’s no wonder I stumbled over and over again. While I do believe there are some gray areas in this life; I’m convinced that most of the time it is easier to tell right from wrong than we want to admit. Just remember, Adam and Eve only had one rule and they broke it.
Lord, I don’t know why I like to push the boundaries so much. Lord, let the Spirit convict me and show me where the lines are. Give me the strength to not just walk away; but to run as far from evil as I can.
